NEWS FROM THE Y

Want to race to raise money for a great cause?  Do you think you could benefit from a 200yd head start?  You will have a chance to do both at the Lake Wales Family YMCA’s Beads for Needs 5K Race, which will benefit the Y’s Teen Building summer program.  It will be a night race beginning at 6:30pm on Friday, February 17th.  The race will begin and end at Kiwanis Park.  To make things interesting every set of beads you buy will get you a 20yd head start; purchase up to ten sets of beads and get a maximum of a 200yd head start.  We will also do a free Kid’s Fun Run on Saturday, February 18th at 12pm. Runners ages 2 – 12 will need to meet downtown at the corner of Stuart and Market.  Every runner will receive an award.

Our runners will be racing around Lake Wailes with glowing necklaces and bracelets.  For those who purchase beads you will hear them beating against their chest as they try to finish first by taking advantage of their head start.  The first man and woman overall will both win a free 6 month YMCA membership.  Awards will also be given to the top three finishers in each age division.  After the race runners can make their way downtown for music and entertainment put on by Lake Wales Mardi Gras.

All runners who register before February 4th will be guaranteed to receive a race t-shirt.  You can register at the YMCA or online at www.lakewalesymca.org/y-programs/registration.  Don’t forget your registration fees will be going to a great cause, Teen Building!

Teen Building is a daily summer program with the mission of helping teens become positive young adults.  Each week we tackle a new issue that affects teen life.  Our topics include violence, exercise and nutrition, personal finance, drugs and alcohol, teen pregnancy, and many other important issues.  We address these matters through group discussion, workshops, and guest speakers.  Our teens work hard on community service projects, and even run their own small business, a concession stand, here at the YMCA pool.  The importance of exercise is also an emphasis at Teen Building.  All of our participants receive access to our Wellness Center, group exercise classes, and our swimming pool.  We give our teens the freedom to help us create a program that they enjoy.  They help us decide what fun activities to participate in and help plan what field trips to go on.  The YMCA is working hard to make a difference in our community.  We appreciate you running hard to help this great cause!
